Personality

Nero is a half demon, half human who incorporates the best and worst of his conflicting bloodlines. Rebellious by nature, it often conflicts with his role as a Knight in the Order of the Sword to the extent that he must work alone, a reputation that has earned him no friends. For Nero, however, there is no love lost. Nero is guarded with his emotions and does not allow many people close to him, his love divided between the two who took him in when he was an orphan on the streets of Fortuna and who, coincidentally, are members of the Order; Kyrie and Credo. Thus Nero’s loyalty is not to the Order or it’s “savior” but to those who showed an abandoned child, alone and possibly ostracized because of his demonic arm, that there was good in the world. The type of good that was flesh and bone and not myth, such as Sparda the savior or God. Thus he rebels, against the idyllic image of the demon Sparda, who is treated as the worlds salvation when Nero knows the cruelty of demons and God, who cursed him with an arm and gave him a life of hardship undeserved. This has led to the creation of a man who relies on no one but himself for survival, a lone wolf.

It’s no surprise that this attitude shaped not only Nero’s outlook on life but also his characteristics. He is snarky, inflexible, reckless and, to those he loves, obsessive, possessive and emotional. These last three must be heavily noted because they, for the most part, determine Nero’s actions thought most of the game. His emotions often sway his thoughts and actions and impede his common sense to the point that it blinds him to his own weaknesses and the larger, more prominent threats against him. This is no more apparent than when Kyrie is kidnapped and Nero, in his panicked rage, constantly battles Dante and manages to alienate what could be his strongest ally and lead. His lack of judgment in this instance doesn’t allow him question why such an obviously powerful demon like Dante is being targeted by enemies that are, essentially, also Nero’s enemies. Human passion blinds the truth his demonic blood would have sensed in Dante.

While most of these characteristics tend to fall in the negative, one indisputable, redeeming fact is that Nero is loyal to those he cares for and his strong sense of morality and personal justice make him a hidden knight dressed in demon’s clothing. Regardless of how the Order may view him or try to alienate him because of his differences, he still chooses to protect those he feels are worth that protection. Kyrie and her brother are living proof. And when his adventures inevitably expand the narrow world he has lived it beyond the borders created by the Order, he learns that the world sucks and that human’s can be as twisted and depraved as demons. But those few that are innocent, regardless of birth, should be protected by the strong.

Nero was given that strength the day God both blessed and cursed him with his devil arm. Where he chose to go with that power was his own choice. And in his love for Kyrie and her acceptance of his demonic roots he found the strength to make that choice and walk that line, the one that defines demons and humans and those Godless fools, like him, who are caught in between.
